Katherine (Zhi-Hua) Gao started her medical training at the age of 16 at Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Nanjing, China. She studied both Western and Chinese medicine during her 5-year full-time course. After completing her Bachelor of Medicine degree and some intense training, she joined Nan Jing Red Cross Hospital in China as a medical doctor in September 1994.

She moved to the UK in 2000. She is fluent in English and knows British culture well.
